The first recognizable form of social media can be traced back to internet forums in the 1970s. These forums were platforms where people could discuss various topics online, and were some of the earliest forms of social media. The first modern social media platform, however, is widely considered to be Six Degrees, which was launched in 1997. It allowed users to upload a profile and make connections with friends. However, it was not a widespread success and the platform was eventually shut down in 2001. Another early platform was LiveJournal, which was launched in 1999 and allowed users to blog and connect with others.

Today the most popular social media sites are:

  1. Facebook: With over 2.7 billion active users, Facebook is the largest and most popular social media platform. It was launched in 2004 and allows users to connect with friends, share content, and join groups.

  2. YouTube: With over 2 billion active users, YouTube is the second most popular social media platform. It is a video-sharing platform that was launched in 2005 and allows users to upload, share, and view videos.

  3. WhatsApp: With over 2 billion active users, WhatsApp is a messaging app that was launched in 2009 and allows users to send text, audio, and video messages to each other.

  4. Instagram: With over 1 billion active users, Instagram is a photo and video-sharing platform that was launched in 2010. It allows users to share pictures and videos with their followers and discover new content through hashtags and user profiles.

  5. TikTok: With over 500 million active users, TikTok is a video-sharing platform that was launched in 2016. It allows users to create and share short videos, often set to music.

  6. Twitter: With over 330 million active users, Twitter is a microblogging platform that was launched in 2006. It allows users to post short messages, called "tweets," and interact with others through the use of hashtags and @mentions.

Pet owners in particular use these social media platforms:

  1. Instagram: Instagram is a photo and video-sharing platform that is popular among pet owners. It allows users to share pictures and videos of their pets, and to discover new content through hashtags and user profiles.

  2. TikTok: TikTok is a video-sharing platform that is popular among pet owners. It allows users to create and share short videos, often set to music, featuring their pets.

  3. Facebook: Facebook is a social media platform that is popular among pet owners. It allows users to connect with friends, share content, and join groups related to pets.

  4. Twitter: Twitter is a microblogging platform that is popular among pet owners. It allows users to post short messages, called "tweets," and interact with others through the use of hashtags and @mentions

The younger generation uses SnapChat...

Snapchat is a multimedia messaging app that allows users to send images and videos that disappear after they have been viewed. It was launched in 2011 and has become popular among young people, especially teens and college students.

The culture that has grown around Snapchat is one that values ephemerality and authenticity. Since messages and content on the platform disappear after they have been viewed, users are encouraged to share spontaneous, authentic, and unedited content. This has led to the creation of a variety of unique features, such as filters and "lenses," which allow users to alter their appearance and surroundings in creative ways.

Snapchat is also known for its use of "streaks," which are essentially a public record of the number of consecutive days that users have Snapchatted each other. Maintaining a high streak count has become a point of pride for many users, and has contributed to the app's popularity.

Overall, the culture of Snapchat is one that values creativity, fun, and connection with friends.

Gilfoyle,

TikTok actually provides some good guides on how to use/create better TikToks. You can look at them here at https://www.tiktok.com/discover/how-to-improve-tiktok. Have you looked at this resource before? There is also a new user guide here at https://www.tiktok.com/safety/en/new-user-guide/.  What aspect of TikTok do you want to do better? Creating videos for example?
